Trick or treat or text: chris ware's new yorker cover

The Digital Design 25 students have been talking about visual storytelling lately, and with Halloween just recently passed, I thought it would be appropriate to share this illustration done by Chris Ware for the cover of The New Yorker back in 2009. It tells the story of parents taking their children out to trick-or-treat in the modern age of technology. The audience is being told about the unfortunate truth that our personal devices receive more attention than the more important moments in life (like taking our children out on Halloween). The relationship between the white masks worn by the children and the white light shining on the faces of their parents is, in my opinion, a beautiful criticism of how technology has reshaped our daily experience.
